Arcos: Redefining Home Decor Shopping with Augmented Reality

Designed an AR-powered app that lets users visualize furniture and decor in their space before buying. Features like style-based recommendations, AR room customization. A showcase of blending UX design with cutting-edge technology to transform retail.

Bringing Your Dream Home to Life

Arcos is a cutting-edge app designed to revolutionize the way people shop for home decor. The idea was simple yet powerful: let users visualize how furniture and decor items would look in their own space before buying. By combining augmented reality (AR) with a personalized shopping experience, Arcos aimed to make home decor shopping intuitive, fun, and stress-free.

The Guesswork of Home Decor Shopping

Shopping for home decor is often a frustrating experience. Customers struggle to visualize how items will fit or look in their space, leading to buyer’s remorse and costly returns. Traditional online shopping lacks the tactile experience of in-store browsing, while in-store shopping doesn’t allow users to see how items will look in their own homes.

The challenge was clear: create an app that would eliminate the guesswork and empower users to make confident purchasing decisions.

Designing for Homeowners and Renters Alike

To create a user-centric solution, we focused on two key personas:

  • The Aspiring Decorator: Someone who loves decorating but struggles to visualize how items will look together.

  • The Practical Shopper: Someone who wants to avoid returns and ensure items fit perfectly in their space.

By understanding these personas, we designed an app that catered to both creativity and practicality.

The Approach: A Blend of Personalization and AR Technology

As the senior designer, I took a user-first approach, blending personalization with cutting-edge AR technology. Here’s how we brought the vision to life:

  1. Onboarding with Style Quiz:

    • During onboarding, users take a quiz featuring photos of different decor styles. This allows the app to recommend products tailored to their tastes.

  2. AR-Powered Room Customization:

    • The “Your Room” feature lets users place furniture and decor items in their space using AR. They can rotate items, change colors, and see how everything fits together.

  3. Seamless Shopping Experience:

    • Users can browse a curated catalog, view product details, and see which stores sell each item. A clear CTA (“Place in my room”) encourages users to visualize items in their space before buying.

  4. Budget Management:

    • While designing their room, users can track the total cost of selected items and adjust their budget accordingly.

This approach ensured the app was not only functional but also delightful to use.

A Personalized, AR-Driven Shopping Experience

The Arcos app wasn’t just a shopping tool—it was a design assistant. Key features included:

  • Style-Based Recommendations: Tailored product suggestions based on user preferences.

  • AR Room Customization: Visualize furniture and decor in your space with AR.

  • Seamless Integration with Retailers: Browse products from multiple stores in one app.

  • Budget Tracking: Manage spending while designing your dream room.

The Impact: Transforming the Way People Shop for Home Decor

The Arcos app delivered measurable results:

  • 30% Increase in User Engagement: Users spent more time exploring products and designing their rooms.

  • 20% Reduction in Returns: Customers felt more confident in their purchases.

  • Higher Customer Satisfaction: Users praised the app for its ease of use and innovative features.
