Yara GrassN: Digitizing grassland optimization

Yara GrassN

Digitizing Grassland Optimization

Context

At Yara International, one of the applications I worked on was GrassN, a tool designed to help farmers maximize the quality and quantity of their pastures. Although the technology was robust, the initial user experience did not reflect its potential, making it difficult to adopt.

Process

As a Lead UX designer, I led user research in the field, defined key workflows, and collaborated with developers to ensure the portal met the unique needs of the agricultural sector. I contributed to transforming manual processes into an efficient and accessible digital solution.

Field work: Interviewing farmers allowed me to understand the daily challenges in crop and fertilizer management.

Data analysis: I collaborated with the data science team to identify key metrics that would be most relevant to users.

User-centered Iterations: I designed prototypes that I tested in real scenarios, adjusting them according to user feedback.

Solution

I redesigned the dashboard to prioritize:

  • Customized fertilization recommendations based on climatic data and soil conditions.
  • An offline system that would allow access to essential functionalities without a stable connection.

Clear visual alerts indicating urgent actions, such as the need for fertilization.

Impact

  • 40% higher adoption: The new experience significantly increased satisfaction and regular use of the tool.
  • 20% more efficient: Farmers reported improved daily decision making thanks to clear and actionable recommendations.

Industry recognition: GrassN has positioned itself as a key tool in the digitization of the agricultural sector.
